Recently we’ve added Simon Deprez to the Zumiez Team. You might have heard of Simon, the guy has amazing technical skateboard skills. Simon grew up at the Zumiez Skatepark, so it goes without saying that he can shred a skatepark. He’s also a contest killer, he won the Best of the West Skateboardcup, got second in Blankenberge and he won the Volcom Wild in the Parks European Championships.

Here’s some footage shot at the park by Sam. We know, that you ‘ll prefer street footage, but hey we live in Belgium so it ‘ll take some more time to release footage of Simon tearing it up in the streets. Better watch out for this guy.

Gentenaar Mohamed ‘Mo’ Saouti is gisteren in skatepark ZumieZ in Wevelgem winnaar geworden van de Belgische Red Bull Manny Mania. Een honderdtal skatefans waren getuige van een boeiende finale waarin onze beste skaters de meest radicale manual tricks uit hun plank toverden. Onder het goedkeurend oog van skatekampioen Axel Cruysberghs ging de stem van de jury uiteindelijk naar de 26-jarige Mohamed ‘Mo’ Saouti uit Gent. Mo vliegt binnen enkele maanden naar New York waar hij het op 18 augustus zal opnemen tegen de beste amateur streetskaters ter wereld. Wie de World Final wint, krijgt de volgende dag meteen toegang tot het Red Bull Manny Mania Pro Event waarin hij of zij zich mag zich meten met de echte manual masters, de pro’s van het internationale skatecircuit. 

“Super blij, maar verrast,” aldus Mohamed Saouti in een eerste reactie. “In de finale stond ik tegenover drie tegenstanders die ik al een tijdje ken, dus ik wist wat hun sterkte en hun skills zijn. Het was dan ook een moeilijke finale die ik niet verwacht had te winnen. Top drie was mijn doel, dus ik ben ongelofelijk content met deze overwinning. Wat de verwachtingen zijn voor New York? Ik denk daar heel veel talent te zien, dus ik zal zeker nog moeten oefenen op mijn manuals, want ik wil een goed figuur slaan. En wie weet, met een beetje geluk… Maar sowieso kijk ik enorm uit naar New York. Het is de eerste keer dat ik naar de States ga, dus wat er ook gebeurt, het wordt fantastisch!”

Met 40 deelnemers en een honderdtal toeschouwers was ook deze editie van Red Bull Manny Mania een succes. Na de slechte weersvoorspellingen voor zondag zag de organisatie zich ‘last minute’ verplicht uit te wijken van het Hasselse openlucht skatepark Kapermolen naar het overdekte skatepark ZumieZ in Wevelgem. Maar uiteindelijk verliep alles op wieltjes en kon het publiek genieten van een namiddag vol adembenemende manual tricks. De finale ging tussen Jonathan Franc, Maarten De Ryck, Steve Achten en Mohamed Saouti. Die laatste wist de jury te overtuigen met onder meer een kickflip manual to crooked grind en een formidabele blunt slide to manual. Mo won hiermee een ticket richting the Big Apple waar hij op zaterdag 18 augustus samen met de finalisten uit 12 andere landen zal deelnemen aan de Red Bull Manny Mania World Final.

Door de slechte weersvoorspelling voor Hasselt aanstaande zondag; regen, noorderwind en 12°,  zijn we genoodzaakt om Red Bull Manny Mania op een overdekte plaats te laten doorgaan.

Plan B is altijd ZumieZ Wevelgem geweest, dus actie! Alles wordt in gereedheid gebracht om er er zondag een topdag van te maken. Op dit moment worden de nieuwe manual pads al in elkaar geschroefd.

Het event is gratis, er wordt zelfs gratis vervoer geregeld vanuit Brugge en Gent.
